Newly released data shows the areas that will be most affected
Britain is bracing for a bitterly cold start to January, with an arctic blast expected to bring more than just New Year's resolutions. Forecasts suggest that New Year's Day could see much of the country experiencing sub-zero temperatures, and snowfall is not off the table.
Another chart suggests that the southwest and Wales might face up to 5cm of snow per hour, while parts of Scotland could see as much as eight. The cold snap is expected to move southwards from the early hours of the new year, spreading through the UK as the day unfolds.Should snow reach the south of the UK, it is predicted to begin around 6pm on New Year's Day.
"Becoming widely mild, perhaps exceptionally so in some places, but also often fairly cloudy, although clearer spells overnight may lead to localised frost and fog."
