If you have assumed the picture on the well-known road sign is a side-profile of a Victorian-style camera, then get ready for a shock.
In response, an unrepentant @FeyeraBender added: “I accept that it’s not CCTV cos that’s literally different technology, but w/e the stuff on the right is definitely an arm attachment and not old-timey bellows!”
Many commented with mind-blown emojis and shocked faces at the revelation. “FFS man why did you have to do this?” a Twitter user fumed with another saying “Stop!!! I am going to unread this post and carry on believing the Victorian theory.” One gave a detailed explanation of the pictogram: “The design is a combination of these two elements: a bellows camera and a windup Hasselblad.” Another added: “More like a Standard 8 film camera. The circles are like the film spool bearings.”Many said that the purpose of the sign is to give the viewer a clear message, rather than to reflect reality. It is a warning tothat there’s a speed camera ahead which will take photographs of any speeding vehicles, so the camera must be recognisable.
One tweeted: “Road traffic design iconography has to be registered immediately regardless of any reality. An old camera works well enough here. Same choice with using a steam train for rail crossings.” Whatever the truth, one user spoke for many when they said: “It’s a bellows camera. No one is persuading me otherwise.”
