A top history prize bearing the premier’s own title could soon be a thing of the past, with local historical societies and the state opposition blaming Andrews government budget cuts.
“It’s regrettable for a Labor government to think they can cut money this way,” said McCalman, who is a member of the Victorian Labor Party. “I think it’s one of those bad decisions made by a bureaucrat who doesn’t get it.”to trim spending by 10 per cent without harming frontline servicesIt’s not unprecedented for the state government to pause funding for the community history awards. In 2006, the money was funnelled into the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.
“These nasty cuts, delivered by Daniel Andrews and Labor, will leave our community poorer,” Davis said.“In the context of Labor’s more than $30 billion of waste and cost overruns on major projects, the spending of tens of thousands of dollars to bolster local history awards – in place since 1997 – seems petty in the extreme.”
Eltham District Historical Society president Jim Connor said groups like his were dismayed by the possibility of receiving fewer state-funded grants.“Our last grant was for archival materials. This may seem very basic, but unless we have appropriate archival materials, we can’t protect our photographs, our printed documents, our maps ... going back to the late 1800s.
