Tributes have been paid to young Gaelic footballer Éilis Maloney following her sudden passing between Christmas and the New Year.

She passed away suddenly on December 28 and tributes have since been paid to the young star who was praised as enthusiastic, determined, and hard working. In a lengthy post from Ballinrobe GAA club, it documents how Éilis represented the club with great distinction both underage and as an adult.
The club did not field a Junior Ladies team with Éilis playing with neighboring parish The Neale. However, she proved instrumental in drumming up support for a return of Ladies Football to the club with the club describing how she 'set about drumming up support among past colleagues, friends and acquaintances.' leading to the revival of a team in 2022. The club added how Éilis was 'overwhelmingly endorsed as captain of the first adult ladies football team in Ballinrobe in over a quarter of a century.' Éilis would go on to win two cups in the club's first season and become the club's first female accredited referee. In a statement from the club, they added: 'Everything Éilis did, she did wholeheartedly and with positive intent. Her teammates in Ballinrobe LGFA all fondly recall her as a talented footballer, a loyal colleague and - above all - someone who always had a kind and generous word to say. 'All in Ballinrobe GAA & LGFA will miss her dearly and remember her contribution to our club with fondness and gratitude.' The club also announced it would form a guard of honour at her funeral. Survived by parents Carmel and Vincent, and brother Sean and sister Claire, her funeral will take place at St Mary’s Church, Ballinrobe on January 2 at 11.30 a
