English ivy can be a picturesque addition to a garden as it grows up walls and outbuildings, but its creeping nature means it can cause damage to garden structures and other plants
While English ivy may lend a charming, rustic look to gardens with its tendrils climbing up walls and outbuildings, this vigorous plant can become a destructive force, capable of strangling trees and reaching towering heights of up to 80 feet. The invasive nature of the plant also threatens the integrity of garden structures, potentially causing damage if not controlled.
The most popular solution among the many responses was to sever the ivy at its roots and then manually strip it away. Sue Line recounted her own experience in dealing with the intrusive plant: "We had the same problem when we moved in. Pulled it all off fences which had to be replaced, then dug out any roots," reports the Mirror. She noted: "Did the trick. Sometimes get the odd bit trying to come back but just pull it out.
Andy Yates offered his method: "Cut it near the root, let it die off on the wall - pull or slide a sharp spade up behind it. On the fence - pulling depends how it has woven in, it might need to come off in chunks." Joy Prime added her voice of support, stating: "If you cut the main root, you should be able to pull it off, but let it die back first! Good luck."
