BBC Gardeners' World star Monty Don has recalled a 'heartbreaking' moment he shared with his wife Sarah when he realised his 'halcyon childhood' was behind him
Monty Don shared a touching memory from his youth, recounting a "heartbreaking" moment he and his wife experienced while driving by a field of barley. The 69 year old presenter of BBC Gardeners' World shared with the Telegraph that at seven years old, after returning from boarding school, he found his garden had "burst into flower".
"And barley grows in Hampshire. I realised with an incredible pang of homesickness that my whole childhood was associated with the ripple of barley. It was heartbreaking that this halcyon childhood, the good bits of it, was now lost to me," as detailed by the Express, reports the Daily Record. Monty Don, the cherished gardening presenter, didn't always have a passion for plants. It was an "ecstatic moment" while planting carrots that set him on the path to becoming a BBC horticultural icon.
In March, revelations about Monty's love life surfaced, detailing how he fell for Sarah while she was married to her first husband, a noted botanist. Monty has candidly stated he has "no regrets at all" about the start of their relationship.
