Scientists made a major breakthrough in understanding the incredible mechanics of insect flight - A complex but efficient wing hinge system.

Insects have no muscles in their wings. Their flight capabilities depend on a complex hinge system at the base of the wings.Scientists have long been trying to decode insects’ flying mechanisms. This is because insects’ body structure is quite different from that of birds and bats, whose wings have evolved from forelimbs.A recent study by researchers at Caltech has described the mechanism responsible for insects’ flight capabilities.

This hinge system has long intrigued scientists. As Michael Dickinson, Caltech’s Esther M. and Abe M. Zarem Professor of Bioengineering and Aeronautics, and executive officer for biology and biological engineering, aptly states, “The fly wing hinge is perhaps the most mysterious and underappreciated structure in the history of life.”

The flies were then placed in a chamber equipped with three high-speed cameras capable of capturing a staggering 15,000 frames per second. This enabled the researchers to measure the minute movements of the wings with exceptional precision.
