The PM said the government's failure to reduce small boat crossings was due to an influx from Vietnam
Mr Sunak says that small boats crossings were 'down by a third' in 2023 and that the plans the Government has implemented 'show that it is possible to make a difference'. 'Now we have a clear plan to put a deterrent in place.' Challenged that crossings have risen by 40 per cent so far this year, and asked if he accepts he has failed on the pledge, he says: 'If you look at the sum total of the time I've been PM the numbers are down.
Asked if he promises that Rwanda flights will leave in July and how many people will leave over the summer, he says 'we've already started detaining people; airfields are booked. 'There will be regular rhythm of flights. 'This is about establishing a deterrent.' His response draws applause from the audience. Asked why he called an election early if he was so confident about getting flights off to Rwanda, Mr Sunak says that his job was to 'restore economic stability'.
