Europe must resist over-reliance on U.S. fossil fuels while uniting to advance its energy independence, warns Germany's Robert Habeck.
Europe must not become too reliant on U.S. oil and gas, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said on Tuesday, a day after Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 47th U.S. President. Europe needs to “meet the Trump administration with an outstretched hand, but not have our hand cut off,” Habeck said at the Handelsblatt energy summit in Berlin, just as President Trump urged Europe once again to buy more American oil and gas.
Habeck also criticized Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on trade partners, saying that these would weaken economies and increase inflation in both the U.S. and Europe. Meanwhile, President Trump urged the European Union to step up its purchases of crude oil and liquefied natural gas from the U.S. if it wants to avoid tariffs on all imports. “The one thing they can do quickly is buy our oil and gas,” Trump told the media on Monday, as quoted by Bloomberg.
