Germany has joined the growing opposition against penalizing car manufacturers who fail to meet net zero targets , advocating instead for firms to retain any fines to invest in reducing emissions. Chancellor Olaf Scholz criticized the European Union's zero emission vehicle plans, which mandate a 15% reduction in emissions from new cars and vans by next year, compared to 2021 levels.
This requirement necessitates a decrease in petrol and diesel production and an encouragement of electric vehicle adoption. However, car manufacturers argue that motorists are not willing to switch and warn that jobs could be at risk if the UK and EU mandates are not softened. If car firms fail to increase the sale of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) to hit the 15% target, they face penalties. By 2030, this target will have grown to a 55% reduction in car emissions and 50% in vans. The ultimate goal by 2035 is a 100% reduction, meaning no new purely fossil-fuelled cars or vans will be sold. Germany's automotive industry, which represents around 5% of the GDP and includes giants such as Audi, BMW, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz, has a significant stake in protecting car firms from fines. Scholz has emphasized the importance of retaining any potential fines for the modernization of the industry
