Stylish and deluxe, Cartmel Lock-Up has been transformed since its original use in the 19th century, as a temporary detention centre for local criminals
Sometimes staying in a hotel, holiday home or cottage can get a bit boring and you want something a bit more exciting.

Now a listed building with an additional storey recently added, you’ll find the new lock-up in the heart of Cartmel village, beautifully positioned between the Lake District National Park and Morecambe Bay coastline. Expertly designed, this quirky abode is a far cry from its former days as the local jail, with every consideration taken to ensure a relaxing and comfortable stay. The historical personality of the building remains evident in the finer original details that are carefully showcased throughout.
The Lock-Up doesn’t include a lounge or kitchen area, but that only provides the perfect excuse to take a stroll into Cartmel, a true hidden gem for foodies. Within easy walking distance, you’ll find an array of gourmet restaurants, traditional tearooms, shops and pubs – and the village even boasts its own racecourse, at which a year-round schedule of events are held.
As it’s on the small side the jail is best for short stays The medieval village grew around the 12th-century Cartmel Priory and the streets are lined with pretty cottages. There are several pubs, cafes and restaurants nearby - including L’Enclume, which has three Michelin stars.
