The Merchant City and Trongate Community Council (MCTCC) is asking for the local authority to do more to tackle noisy street performers in Glasgow's city centre.

This comes in response to the local authority's public consultation on busking and street performing in the city centre. The Merchant City and Trongate Community Council believes the current "system is being widely abused” despite bringing "pleasure to residents and visitors."

However, the Community Council said: “While it is one of Glasgow’s attractions there is an urgent need for the existing Code to be strengthened and ideally replaced by a relevant Bye-Law or series of Bye-Laws.” The MCTCC claim many buskers had never heard of the Code or misunderstood it and are demanding a new Bye-Law be put in place to apply to non-musical performers such as street preachers. They are asking for record of offenders to be kept, particularly repeat offenders, and action taken.A Glasgow City Council spokesperson said: “Glasgow welcomes buskers and street entertainers who liven up our city, with the vast majority of these performers acting within the guidelines of our code of conduct.
