A motion by the SNP, which stated the policy is a 'scar' on society, has been passed. It urges all political parties to commit to removing the limit.

Glasgow City Council has called on all political parties to scrap the two child benefit cap, as an SNP councillor described the policy as a “scar on the soul of society”.

A Labour amendment, which said the Scottish Government has taken “inadequate measures” to reduce child poverty, was unsuccessful. Cllr Kelly said: “We need to be the ones influencing Scottish and UK policy, as we will be the ones dealing with the fall out. He added: “Under the Tories and the SNP, inequality and poverty has soared with 40,000 more children in poverty than compared to a decade ago. We are not seeing action on the scale that is required.”

A Conservative amendment was also rejected. Cllr John Daly, Conservative, said: “If poverty was just a matter of giving more money or increasing welfare, then the powers are very much in the Scottish Government’s hands.”
