Glasgow City Council Labour leader facing challenge for job after one year in charge
The Labour leader for Glasgow City Council is facing a challenge to his job after one year in the position.
Anderston councillor Philip Braat is reportedly taking on current group leader George Redmond for the post. Meanwhile, the Daily Record reports that rumours are spreading that Newlands councillor Stephen Curran will challenge veteran Frank McAveety for the business manager role.Redmond defeated the late Malcolm Cunning 25-11 last May to become Labour leader in the City Chambers.
Labour fell short of toppling the SNP administration in Glasgow at the council election, but say they are hopeful of taking the local authority next time. It is understood there were internal Labour divisions on whether the party should have tabled an alternative budget this year.Braat is expected to challenge Redmond and the vote takes place on Monday. A Labour insider said Redmond was in a strong position to see off the challenge.
