The LEZ came into force in June this year, in an attempt to improve air pollution in the city centre. Since then, more than 25 council-owned vehicles have been hit with penalties.

Glasgow City Council bosses hit their own staff with fines for entering the Low Emission Zone in non-compliant council-owned vehicles.

Data obtained by a Freedom of Information request showed that a total of 27 council cars and vans have been issued with a fine since then, The Times reports.READ MORE: Glasgow mum fears for children's safety after drug needle found near Lidl store The council said that 41 vehicles had initially been flagged up as violating LEZ rules - however, 14 of those were an error. This is because they had been modified to be able to enter the city's LEZ areas.

A council spokeswoman said: “Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone is an essential measure to protect public health by reducing stubbornly high levels of harmful air pollution in our city centre.
