Concerns have been raised by a city councillor that gambling problems could spiral over the festive period due to financial stress.

A Glasgow councillor is issuing a warning about the dangers of gambling in the run up to Christmas amid concerns over gambling addiction rates.

She said: “The Christmas season can be stressful and lonely for a lot of people, especially those with gambling problems. The blizzard of gambling advertisements adds to the financial and social pressures of Christmas and tempts those suffering from ongoing austerity and the Cost-of-Living Crisis with a quick fix.

During a discussion with the Local Democracy Reporting Service councillor Docherty also highlighted that children as young as primary school have been involved in gambling traits.“There are games like Fifa, Candy Crush or games where you have to “buy coins” to play which encourages these learned behaviours and by the time these young people are old enough to decide if they want to gamble it is almost engrained in them.
