The Hunterian Museum and the Hunterian Art Gallery at the University of Glasgow are to be 'revitalised' after receiving the National Lottery grant, with a project to begin that will help decide the museum's future.

A Glasgow museum that is Scotland's oldest is to begin a long programme of redevelopment after receiving a £249,000 grant.

The Hunterian is Scotland’s oldest public museum, opened 1807. The museum has previously grappled with its colonial history. A plaque was also installed in the Cloisters acknowledging that the land the University now stands on was once home to plantation owner Robert Bogle and that the University, in the 18th and 19th centuries, the museum benefitted from gifts from individuals who profited from slavery.

A survey of the buildings will also be carried out, funded by the University. The Hunterian, home to more than 1.5 million artefacts, said it would engage in a programme of 'consultation, collaboration and co-production' and a 'participatory approach' with stakeholders and communities to 'explore barriers to inclusion, opening up the collections to more diverse voices and working with them to develop future programmes and displays.
