The city of Glasgow hosted the Michelin Guide's first ever awards ceremony outside of England, showcasing the vibrancy and excellence of its culinary scene. Michelin-starred chefs, industry leaders, and journalists gathered to celebrate the achievements of Glasgow's restaurants, with Lorna McNee at Cail Bruich and Graeme Cheevers of Unalome retaining their prestigious stars. Two new Bib Gourmand awards were presented to GaGa in Partick and Margo in the city centre, highlighting the city's commitment to quality dining at accessible prices. The event was a resounding success, solidifying Glasgow's position as a culinary destination.
Like many people, I've never fully understood the fuss surrounding Michelin Stars . The distinction always seemed to be given to restaurants (mainly in places like London and Manchester) where the food looked incredibly appetizing, but the prices certainly didn't. That all changed on Monday night when the best and brightest of the UK's food and drink scene arrived in the city for the Michelin guide's first ever award ceremony outside of England.
The significance of Glasgow being chosen may have been lost on some - but the fact we beat out the likes of Edinburgh and Dublin was massively significant. For me, it was a nod to how well the city's food and drink scene has been doing since the challenges of the pandemic and Brexit, and followed up Glasgow gaining its first Michelin Star in well over a decade in 2021, and a second, just a year later. Though the 2025 ceremony, held at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, didn't see any new restaurants of ours awarded a star, both Lorna McNee at Cail Bruich (who was given a starring role on the night) and Graeme Cheevers of Unalome both retained theirs. It also saw two of the city's hottest trending restaurants, in Partick's GaGa and new city centre arrival Margo, being given Bib Gourmands, taking our total to five of those awards which highlights restaurants that serve high quality food for a fair price and are recognised as a hallmark of must-visit restaurants across the UK and Ireland. Just last month, the exciting Fallachan Kitchen, which was recently launched by top chef Craig Gozier in the Clydeside railway arches close to SWG3, was among the newest restaurants to be added to the Michelin guide, alongside the aforementioned GaGa and Margo, showing how much the influential guide's inspectors were visiting our city to discover these new places, and not only that, loving them too. The ceremony itself was a resounding success; with Kelvingrove providing a magical backdrop and organist Paul Carroll, who was scouted by Glasgow Life to perform, providing the soundtrack on the night. The talented local musician introduced the ceremony alongside an expert piper in a Glasgow welcome that was much appreciated by the assembled audience of chefs running a Michelin-starred restaurant from across the UK and Ireland, journalists, influencers, partners and industry leaders. The afterparty, held in the stunning Old Fruit Market, saw the gathered chefs and industry leaders taken by coach to the Merchant City venue, where Scottish produce was given the highlight and saw National Chef of Scotland, Gary Maclean, providing incredible Scottish seafood that saw queues gathering to enjoy succulent shucked oysters, mouth watering lobsters and delicious langoustines. Overall, it was a magical night that saw Glasgow, and its wonderful food and drink scene, placed front and centre to an audience of the UK's very best chefs. Described by council leader Susan Aitken as a 'fiercely modern city' in her opening speech, with Margo head chef Robin Aitken adding that our dining scene is 'diverse, unpretentious, fun and casual', it was a brilliant advert for what makes this city great, and showed we have a restaurant industry we should all be proud of
