Council leader Susan Aitken said her authority would not consent to the request from the Home Office to host asylum seekers on a ship
Aitken made the comments as the first asylum seekers arrived on the Bibby Stockholm barge in Portland, Dorset on Monday. Tory Home Office minister Sarah Dines had suggested the boat could house 500 asylum seekers by the end of the week.
Taking to Twitter, with a post that was later shared by First Minister Humza Yousaf, the SNP leader of the council said: “The UK government wants @GlasgowCC to give consent to an asylum barge being sited in the city. We will not give it. The UK Government plans to use barged and military bases to house asylum seekers to reduce costs. It comes after complaints about asylum seekers being housed in hotels.
