Visitor numbers are good despite port and canal issues, says smokehouse shop worker

The village of Glasson Dock on the River Lune estuary near Morecambe Bay is seeing some progress with investment in shops and businesses. But some sites remain empty, under-developed or are impacted by long-running port and canal infrastructure problems, people feel.

The business sells locally smoked salmon, Morecambe Bay shrimps and other Lancashire food and drinks, along with a bakery, gifts and newspapers.

"The one thing everyone comments about currently is the lack of water in the inner dock. In the past, its water level was high and there used to be boats there. Now, people ask why is there all the silt in the dock? Why does it look like that? What's happening? And who is paying for it? People say they've never seen the dock looking like that before."Regarding the broken sea gate. most people seem to think it has to be maintained and that things can break over the years.

"The Victoria has been for sale for around £300,000, I think. But people think it would need £1million to do it up. It's also a Grade II-listed building. It's the sort of project someone local might take on, if they won the lottery. People care about it. There also used to be a club further along the east side of the quay. A lot of people used to there in the past.

But she also she added: "Boats are now leaving Glasson Marina, which is good. But every time a boat leaves, we lose water from the marina."
