Daniel Gyollai, goalkeeper for Glentoran, is being praised as a hero after he rushed to the aid of a Linfield fan who suffered a cardiac incident during an Irish Cup match. Andrew Matchett, a Linfield club steward, received medical attention on the pitch, prompting a pause in the game. Gyollai quickly grabbed a defibrillator and ran to assist medical staff attending to Matchett. Matchett's son, Andy Jnr, expressed his family's deep gratitude to Gyollai for his quick thinking and sportsmanship, stating that his actions 'just might have saved my dad's life'.

The family of a Linfield fan who suffered a cardiac-related incident at Friday night's Irish Cup clash at the Oval have hailed Glentoran goalkeeper Daniel Gyollai as a 'hero'. Andrew Matchett needed medical attention during the sixth-round match, forcing the game to be paused. Glentoran star Gyollai was among the first to respond, grabbing a defibrillator from the stadium and racing to the away stand to assist medical staff attending to Andrew, a longstanding Linfield club steward.

Andrew's son, Andy Jnr, expressed his family's gratitude, stating that his father is 'doing well and back on his feet'. He particularly commended Gyollai's sportsmanship, saying, 'Honestly, the sportsmanship he showed to a rival team's supporter has to be commended. He has become a hero to myself and my family, I can't thank him enough.' Andy Jnr emphasized the quick thinking of everyone involved, stating that their actions 'just might have saved my dad's life'. He added, 'Dad is doing well and in a stable condition. He's back on his feet again. So a massive thanks to the medical team and all who worked with him.' The incident unfolded just a week after a Linfield ballboy received praise for his quick action in helping a Cliftonville fan who needed medical attention during an Irish Premiership game. Andy Jnr highlighted how the support his father received at the Oval demonstrated that football rivalry can be superseded by helping those in need. He noted that 'both sets of supporters came together in wishing my dad well'. 'My dad's a massive Linfield fan and is a club steward so to hear of a rival goalkeeper from Glentoran rushing from the pitch and into the stand to his aid just shows that rivalry is put to the side,' he continued. He expressed his hope that his father would soon be back supporting his beloved team. Andy Jnr also thanked the supporters from other Irish League clubs who sent well-wishing messages, stating that 'that means the world to the family'. Glentoran also commended Gyollai for his assistance to Andrew. The club stated on social media, 'It's been well publicised that goalkeeper Daniel Gyollai acted fast to help the medical team transport important equipment as quickly as possible to the Linfield fan who required assistance during a medical emergency during yesterday's game. We have received several messages of gratitude for Dan's quick thinking and selfless act during a time of need from the supporters family. We're glad to hear he is in a stable condition and making a recovery. Very proud of our number 1.
