Linfield captain Jamie Mulgrew acknowledges the team's struggles against Glentoran this season, ahead of their crucial Irish Cup clash.
Jamie Mulgrew concedes there's no escaping Linfield's recent struggles against Glentoran . The Blues have yet to defeat their fierce rivals this season, enduring three losses in their four encounters across all competitions. The 'Big Two' are set for another clash this weekend, squaring off in a crucial Irish Cup last-16 showdown at the Oval on Friday night.
Declan Devine's Glentoran side knocked Linfield out of the BetMcLean Cup earlier in the season and have also secured two Premiership victories against David Healy's men. Their most recent meeting resulted in a goalless draw on Boxing Day. Influential Linfield captain Mulgrew acknowledges the team's dismal derby record this season, but assures they will be fully prepared for the battle in East Belfast. Speaking ahead of this week's matches against Crusaders and Glentoran, Mulgrew, who is currently sidelined due to injury, stated to Linfield TV: 'We've had our struggles against Glentoran this year. There's no hiding away from that. The proof is there for everyone to see. It's the Irish Cup as well which gives it that extra bit of incentive. It is one game, and you only get one chance at it. We obviously treat both games (Crusaders and Glentoran) as massive games in the season, as they all are. But this week, if we can get the two wins it would really give us the platform to drive on and have a successful season.' This week, Mulgrew penned a new one-year contract extension with Linfield, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2025/26 season. This will also mark 20 seasons of the 38-year-old midfielder's illustrious career at Windsor Park. When asked about handling the constant pressure and expectations at the club, Mulgrew said: 'If I am being honest, I don't find it overly difficult. I enjoy it. I enjoy the changing room I have been involved in over the years. I enjoy the challenge and pressure. I basically enjoy playing for Linfield. It is an honour and privilege and something I am proud of. There are times you get down, when you're not winning games. And that heaps pressure on everyone. But it is important to have belief in each other. We have had setbacks this season but we have bounced back and proved we are a good team collectively. We have to keep showing that desire going forward.
