West Ham United have appointed former Chelsea manager Graham Potter as their new head coach.
After the club confirmed the sacking of Julen Lopetegui on Wednesday (8 January), West Ham United have appointed Graham Potter as their new manager. The job will be the 49-year-old’s first in management since leaving Chelsea in April 2023, just seven months after signing a five-year contract with the Blues that had been due to run until summer 2027.
Although there should still be two-and-a-half years remaining on his long-forgotten deal at Stamford Bridge, it has now been revealed that West Ham will not pay compensation to their rivals for hiring Potter. That is due to the fact that the incoming Hammers boss has apparently now severed financial ties with Chelsea. Last summer, it was reported that the Blues had agreed to continue to pay Potter his £200,000 per week salary for 18-months after his departure. Any club appointing him in that period would have seen the wage they paid the 49-year-old deducted from what he was owed by his former club. But with that agreement having come to an end in October 2024, Chelsea will not gain financially in any way from West Ham now appointing the Englishman. It always looked as though the appointment of Potter as their new manager would be a good one for the Hammers. Things did not work out for him at Chelsea, but he previously showed at Brighton that he can do a very solid job as a Premier League manager. You would therefore expect him to offer a sense of stability at West Ham, and set the club up to progress in the same way he did at the AMEX with the Seagulls. Now the fact that they do not have to pay compensation to Chelsea for the appointment of Potter makes this move look even more beneficial, which could be important as they look to strengthen with the transfer window currently open. As a result those at the London Stadium will no doubt be expecting a bright future under their new manager
