Peter Walthrew said he wants to help others in a similar position to him
Peter Walthrew, 68, developed vascular peripheral disease, which led to him losing a leg. Just 11 months later he was told by doctors he would have to lose his other leg in an amputation which would save his life.
After the operation, Peter began to struggle. He said: "When I lost one leg I coped quite well, but once my other leg was gone, daily tasks became more difficult, and I became suicidal.” ACSIL provides support and advice to amputees and their carers, from having weekly meetings to organising day trips. They visit hospitals around Liverpool to talk to patients before and after amputation.
Peter said: “It's not just the amputees who suffer but also their loved ones. If it wasn't for my wife and children I wouldn't know what I would have done.”
