Heavy snow, rain, and freezing temperatures disrupt the start of the new year for Greater Manchester residents. Schools closed, flood warnings issued, and residents share their experiences with the ongoing winter weather.

Greater Manchester faced continued weather woes on Monday morning, the first day back to normality for many after the Christmas holidays. Commuters, pedestrians, and schoolchildren encountered heavy snow, rain, and freezing temperatures. The Met Office issued two weather warnings for heavy rain, snow, and ice in the region. Several flood alerts and warnings were in place, and most schools decided to remain closed.

Oldham schools were particularly affected, with institutions like Oldham College, Hopwood Hall College, and Christ Church C.E. Primary School in Denshaw giving students a day off. Denshaw, historically one of Greater Manchester's worst-hit areas during snowfall due to its elevated location and surrounding hills, was visited by the Manchester Evening News to speak to residents about their experiences. David, a resident from Grains Bar, said: 'We're usually alright here because this is a main road and the council are really good at gritting it. I was due to go see my mother but I decided there was too much traffic. 'We're always dreading it when it snows because this road comes just off the motorway and people use it as a rat run.' Clayton Marshall, landlord of the Printer Arms in Denshaw, noted that despite his five-hour commute, the snow presented a business opportunity. He stated: 'It can work out for us, sometimes the whole village makes its way to the pub if the snow is low enough and the roads are clear.' 'It can work the other way too though because snow can be so thick that people can't travel. But you'll see kids sledding down hills and having fun on their day off.
