Personal finance experts advise switching to own-brand products and considering frozen options to reduce grocery bills during the rising cost of living. The tips come as retailers like Sainsbury's warn of impending inflation, particularly on fresh food, driven by government changes to national insurance contributions.

Tesco, Aldi, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Lidl shoppers are being encouraged to make simple changes to their grocery habits to save money during the ongoing cost of living crisis . Personal finance experts have highlighted several easy swaps that can significantly reduce household spending. One such swap is switching from premium branded loaves of bread, which typically cost around £1.60, to store-own brands that are available for about 80p.

Money saving expert Andrew Gosselin explained that buying two loaves a week could result in a weekly saving of £1.60, adding up to £83.20 annually. Similarly, opting for own-brand cereal instead of big-name brands can save households around £78 per year. The cost of own-brand cereal can drop from £2.50 a box to approximately £1.00. Replacing brand-name sauces and condiments with budget-friendly alternatives can also save about £1 per shopping trip, potentially adding up to £40 or more by the end of the year. Frozen fish fillets are another area where shoppers can save, costing significantly less than fresh fish, with a potential saving of around £2 per pack, accumulating to over £100 annually if fish is a regular part of the weekly menu. These tips come amid warnings that changes to employers' national insurance contributions, announced in the government's October budget, will drive inflation, particularly on fresh food. Sainsbury's CEO Simon Roberts expressed concern that the changes, which will add £140m to the retailer's wage bill from April, are coming at a rapid pace and will contribute to inflation. While Sainsbury's remains committed to opening more supermarkets and convenience stores, Roberts stated that the company will need to carefully consider hiring decisions due to the increased costs
