Leaders in Grove City say they're taking action after an ABC6 On Your Side Problem Solvers investigation featuring a paraplegic hit in a crosswalk.
Sandra Hooker's paraplegic son was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle while he was in a crosswalk along Columbus Street at Haughn Road in Grove City in September of 2023. She told Problem Solvers that her son was testing a new manual wheelchair at the time. February 1, 2024 featured James Alston in February who was left nearly nonverbal and with limited mobility to his upper body after he was hit by a car.
Now the city's safety director tells Problem Solvers he's working on changes to ordinances in Grove City. "What we want to do is target those traffic violations that contribute to those kinds of things and hold people accountable whether that is through increased fines or penalties," said Grove City Safety Director Kevin Teaford.
In the coming weeks, Teaford will present the city council with a new ordinance that would triple penalties for distracted drivers in Grove City over state law. However, this change in ordinance would not have made a difference for the driver who hit Alston.
