The Guatemalan Congress dealt a blow to President Bernardo Arévalo's government on Thursday by rejecting a government decree on a state of public calamity. The decree, which aimed to address the forest fires causing poor air quality in three departments of the country, was rejected by opposition lawmakers led by the VAMOS party. The government had intended to mobilize resources from an emergency fund of around $14 million to purchase supplies for firefighting without strict controls. The government reported over 40 forest fires across the country, most of which were intentionally started, prompting calls for investigation by the prosecutor's office.
