The Chinese New Year of the Snake was celebrated in Belfast with a vibrant performance by the Guizhou Acrobatic Troupe, hosted by the Chinese Consulate in partnership with the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Translink. The event showcased traditional Chinese artistry and cultural exchange, fostering connections between Belfast's diverse communities and China.
Belfast celebrated the Chinese New Year with a series of dazzling performances by the Guizhou Acrobatic Troupe . Hosted by the Chinese Consulate in collaboration with the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Translink, the extraordinary 45-minute show took place at the central atrium of Belfast 's Grand Central Station. Invited guests and the public were treated to the incredible skills of the eight-member troupe.
Amongst those present were Chinese Consul General Li Nan, representatives from the local Chinese community, school children, and members of the arts community. The troupe, who earlier performed at Belfast City Hall, are currently on a UK-wide tour marking the Chinese New Year of the Snake. This significant event, also known as the Spring Festival, holds immense cultural importance in China. It signifies the end of winter and the arrival of spring, traditionally observed when the new moon appears between January 21st and February 20th.In Chinese culture, the snake is revered as a symbol of intelligence, wisdom, and charm. Consul General Mr. Li Nan expressed his delight in the event's return to Northern Ireland after the Covid-19 pandemic, highlighting Belfast's renowned cultural diversity and artistic vibrancy. He emphasized the significance of the 'Happy Chinese New Year' brand, which has been promoting cultural exchange for over 20 years, and its contribution to enriching the local cultural landscape. Mr. Li Nan also stressed the importance of people-to-people exchanges in fostering stronger bilateral relationships between China and Northern Ireland. He concluded his remarks with a heartfelt wish for a prosperous Year of the Snake for the people of Northern Ireland, echoing the Chinese saying that 'friendship between the people leads to good relations between countries and nations'
