EXCLUSIVE: Steps' Ian 'H' Watkins tells us about his future with the band, his TV show in Welsh and the magical rollercoaster that is raising eight-year-old twins
For a man who’s been part of the pop landscape for almost three decades, you would think Ian ‘H’ Watkins would live and breathe showbiz. But when we catch up with the Welshman to celebrate the release of his new TV show, there’s only one thing that matters to him – and that’s his beloved children.
His eight year-old twin sons, Macsen and Cybi, are H’s pride and joy. So much so that his latest TV venture – one of the few he’s committing to right now – is essentially a love letter to them. Speaking a different language isn’t the only obstacle for H when it comes to fatherhood. Like any parent, he faces the neverending juggle of raising kids, and admits that it takes a village, including his partner, Tom, to help him.
“I paint, so I have lots of exhibitions on,” he tells us. “I’m an artist, and doing that on my time enables me to do the school run, the swimming lessons and the kickboxing classes. I love it. For the last five years, I have not stopped. So it’s time for me to say ‘no’ to a lot of things. There’s power in saying no and that’s important when you have a family.”
And does this new lease of life for the band and their fans mean there’s a new album or tour on the way? “Oh, my gosh. Well, if we do anything, the next landmark will be our 30th anniversary, which is crazy,” H teases.
