Timber rattlesnakes were once found throughout New Jersey, but are now confined to relatively small areas in the northwestern corner of the state and in the Pine Barrens.

So I asked Karen, “what was wrong with that snake?”Phoned the zoologist. “Hey, Joe, think about that.” So even though I never saw the reptile, that’s one of the half a dozen times that my path has crossed that of a timber rattlesnake in New Jersey.
But do not try to pick one up! If you want to get one off a road or trail, just shoo it along with a suitably long, leafy branch. Chances are it will leave on its own, once it knows you are there.
