An expert warns against using salt in your air fryer to prevent damage to the appliance and potential food contamination.
An expert has issued a health warning about using a specific ingredient in your air fryer, raising concerns about potential food contamination. With air fryers becoming increasingly popular kitchen appliances in millions of homes due to their cost-effective cooking method, users are being cautioned against seasoning food before or during the cooking process.
This advice follows a series of warnings regarding the safe use of these appliances, particularly after Christmas when they are frequently gifted. Cooks are advised to never use salt in their air fryers due to two primary risks. Dr. Richard Anderson, Head of Learning and Development at High Speed Training, with over 14 years of experience in food hygiene and safety, warned that seasoning with salt in the air fryer drawer can damage the appliance's lining during cooking. He explained that tiny flecks of this damaged lining could end up in the food, posing a potential health hazard. He stated, 'Air fryers are incredibly convenient and are safer than traditional deep-frying, but like any kitchen appliance, they come with risks. Understanding the basics of air fryer safety can help to avoid accidents and keep your cooking stress-free.' Dr. Anderson recommends seasoning food only after it has been cooked to prevent damage to the air fryer's lining. In addition to avoiding salt, Dr. Anderson provided several other safety tips for air fryer users. He emphasized the importance of placing the appliance on a stable work surface near a power socket. He also suggested keeping the air fryer in a well-ventilated area of the kitchen, ideally near a vent hood, and turning on the vent hood during use. If proper ventilation is not available, he recommends opening windows while using the air fryer.Furthermore, Dr. Anderson cautioned against using extension cords to power the appliance. He advised plugging the air fryer directly into the power socket, stating that extension cords can experience power fluctuations, potentially causing malfunctions in the air fryer. He summarized his advice by saying, 'You should plug your air fryer directly into the power socket and avoid using any extension cords. Extension cords can dip in power, which can cause faults in your air fryer.
