Dog rescue staff are warning people to think carefully before giving pets as gifts this Christmas. Dogs Trust Merseyside says shelters face increasing pressure from a surge in pet abandonment. The RSPCA reported its highest abandonment figures since 2019, reflecting a troubling trend across the UK. Dogs Trust, a charity that has been caring and rehoming dogs since 1891, is one of the shelters experiencing this pressure. In 2023, the organisation cared for over 13,000 dogs across the country.
” Research conducted by the Dogs Trust and Cats Protection found that 26% of tenants would stay longer in rental properties if they were allowed to keep pets. The charity has been advocating for legislative changes including the Government’s introduction of the Renters’ Right Bill, which aims to provide better security for responsible pet owners. Dogs Trust Merseyside currently has 18 dogs ready for adoption, and the charity relies heavily on public support.
