The Victory Over Blindness statue outside Manchester Piccadilly was installed five years ago

Vision-impaired veterans have shared their heart-rending stories at a poignant ceremony to mark the fifth anniversary of a World War One sculpture outside Manchester Piccadilly.

“I was the main breadwinner. The army was my home, it was my career, my job and when I was discharged I lost everything. I lost the will to live. I lost my concept of life,” he said. “I’m able to now give something back to the charity and encourage and inspire newly blinded veterans that come to our charity."

Simon, from Morley in West Yorkshire, received life changing support from Blind Veterans UK and was able to retain 25 per cent vision in his right eye following surgery. One of those helped by Blind Veterans UK is John Nicol, who joined the charity eight years ago and now works as a volunteer and standard bearer.
