A mother and her baby were left homeless on Christmas Day and sought refuge at a Glasgow shelter. Volunteers were shocked to see the family return the next day, highlighting a need for better support systems for homeless families.
Volunteers at a Glasgow homeless charity were left 'shocked' after a mother and her baby turned up to their shelter on the night of December 25. The mum and her young child - who is said to have been around eight-months-old - had no place to call home on Christmas day after seeking help at Homeless Project Scotland's Glassford Street shelter. The heartbreaking moment left volunteers saddened.
Colin McInness' team provided hot food, drinks and contacted Glasgow City Council for emergency accommodation however, were shocked to see the mum and her baby return on Boxing Day morning. Speaking to Glasgow Live he said: 'We provided hot drinks, food and contacted the council for accommodation - once that was provided we hoped to not see them return. However, the next day the mother and child returned in the morning and we were shocked. 'We contacted the council again and emphasized that to see a returning child is unacceptable and we feel they had been let down - if they were properly supported and accommodated the first time they would not have had to present a second time.' The Homeless Project Scotland team were later reassured by Social Services the mum and child would be appropriately supported going forward. Colin added: 'Touch wood, we haven't seen them since then. It was pretty awful to see a family come in on Christmas Day when you expect children to be sat around the Christmas tree playing with toys on such a special day.' The charity has taken to Facebook to share the heartbreaking story, with hundreds of locals now offering their help. The picture attached to the post shows a pram within the night shelter. The post reads: 'This Christmas night, a heartbreaking scene unfolded at the Glasgow night shelter. A mother and her baby arrived, seeking refuge as they had no place to call home on this special day.
