Christmas is the 'worst time' for many people
As many as 32 million Brits could be feeling lonely and isolated this festive season, prompting calls for ministers to address the nation's "loneliness epidemic". The Centre for Social Justice has highlighted that Christmas can be the "worst of times" for many, painting a bleak picture of a "shocking world where Brits face a holiday period empty of friends and family".
Alarmingly, 22% of adults feel "existentially lonely and fundamentally separated from the rest of the world". Further highlighting the strain on people nationwide, almost half of adults did not believe that "most people are happy", while less than half thought that "most people can be trusted". The think tank has called on the Government to take decisive measures to bolster family ties, address the "acute" loneliness experienced by many older individuals, ensure that planning reforms result in "well-designed communities" and confront the issue of "increasing poverty".
"However, for too many of us this is the worst of times. For the lonely, the Christmas season is a painful reminder of their own isolation.
