The Met Office has issued two weather warnings for heavy snow and strong winds on New Year's Day, potentially causing disruption to transport and power supplies.
Met Office forecasters have issued two new weather warnings for heavy and persistent snow and strong winds on New Year's Day. The warning for snow, from 9am on Wednesday (January 1) to 3am the next day, just misses border towns to the north of Nottinghamshire - such as Bawtry and the nearby Worksop - and covers parts of Manchester, Sheffield and the likes of Leeds, Lancashire, Middlebrough and the North East.
Forecasters warned that heavy and persistent snow could lead to disruption, with a small chance of power cuts, and a small chance to travel delays on the roads and to transport. Small rural communities could be cut off, they say. Meanwhile, a separate yellow weather warning has been issued for the East Midlands - covering Nottinghamshire in its entirety. From 9am on Wednesday through to 6am on Thursday (January 2), forecasters say there's a small chance of longer journey times and disruption to transport. They say there's a small chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, and of power cuts. 'A deep area of low pressure is expected to cross the UK from the west, bringing a spell of very strong winds. Gusts of 65-75 mph are likely around coasts and hills, especially in the south and west, with 50-60 mph gusts likely fairly widely inland,' a weather agency spokesperson said
