Helicopter Pilot Requested Visual Separation Before Fatal Crash, Audio Reveals

New audio recordings from the fatal helicopter crash in Washington D.C. show the helicopter pilot requesting visual separation from an American Airlines passenger plane. The NTSB is investigating several factors, including staffing at the air traffic control tower and the helicopter's altitude.

New audio recordings shed light on the fatal helicopter crash in Washington D.C., revealing crucial interactions between the helicopter pilot and air traffic control (ATC). The recordings indicate that the helicopter, identified as Priority Air Transport 25 ( PAT-25 ), was able to visually locate the American Airlines passenger plane, a CRJ (Canadair Regional Jet), and twice requested permission to maneuver around it using sight, without further ground support.

Specifically, PAT-25 requested 'visual separation' from the CRJ, signifying that the helicopter pilot assumed responsibility for observing the passenger jet and avoiding a collision. This request was made in response to an ATC inquiry about whether PAT-25 had the CRJ in sight. ATC granted permission for 'visual separation' both times. The recent incident follows a similar event just 24 hours prior, when a different American Airlines flight, flight 4514, had to take evasive action to avoid a helicopter near the airport. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) examining various factors, including staffing at the airport's air traffic control tower. It has been reported that an air traffic controller left work early on the day of the crash, potentially leaving only one person to monitor both airplane and helicopter traffic. The FAA's preliminary report noted that staffing at Reagan Washington National Airport was 'not normal' before the accident. The NTSB is also looking into the altitude of the helicopter involved in the crash. FAA maps indicate that helicopters are required to remain below 200ft in the area surrounding the airport, but flight tracking data suggests PAT-25 may have been flying at 300ft in the moments leading up to the collision. Aviation experts suggest that helicopters may be granted permission to exceed altitude restrictions under certain circumstances, particularly with military traffic. Investigators will need to determine the accuracy of the altitude data and whether PAT-25 had authorization to breach the altitude limit. While the videos capturing the crash are clear and impactful, the reasons behind it remain unclear.
