Mortimer House, a Grade II-listed building in Nottingham opposite Castle, is on sale for over £1 million. Designed by renowned architect Watson Fothergill, the property includes a pub, restaurant, offices, and flats. Nottingham City Council, facing financial challenges, is selling assets to balance its budget. Other properties sold include the Embankment pub, Peggy's Skylight jazz club, and Alfred House.

An historic Grade II-listed property opposite Nottingham Castle has been put up for sale by Nottingham City Council with an asking price of more than £1 million. The building, known as Mortimer House, was designed by the famous 19th-century Nottingham architect Watson Fothergill and includes a pub and restaurant.

Mortimer House encompasses the Castle pub and Fothergills, a popular restaurant known for its Sunday roasts. Both are run by the Ever So Sensible group. The property, in Castle Road and Hounds Gate, also includes offices and flats. Listed on behalf of the local authority by Acuitus, a London auction house, it will go under the hammer on February 13.

"Fothergill's buildings are important to Nottingham's history and individuality. As a listed building, Mortimer House is of special historical and architectural interest. It captures Fothergill's interpretation of the Domestic Revival style while still using his favoured Gothic motifs. I particularly like that because it has been converted into pubs it is possible to go inside and see the layout of the building.

In its reasoning for the ongoing sales, the council said: “The council had faced a budget gap of over £50m for 2024/25 due to issues facing councils across the country, including increased demand for children’s and adults’ social care, rising homelessness presentations and inflation.
