The taxman has issued a warning to workers as we head deeper into the festive season
HMRC has issued a stern warning to millions of workers who are earning more than the minimum wage, particularly those taking on extra work during the festive season. The UK tax authority has called on employees picking up shifts this Christmas to "check your pay" to ensure they are not being underpaid as the busy holiday period gets underway.
The taxman advised: "Have you started a Christmas job? No matter how long you've been employed for, you are legally entitled to be paid at least the National Minimum Wage. This includes temporary seasonal staff working in shops, hotels, garden centres, Christmas markets, restaurants and warehouses." Following recommendations from the Low Pay Commission in autumn 2023, new minimum wage rates have been set for various age brackets. Workers aged 21 and over will see their wages go up from £11.44 an hour to £12.21, reports Birmingham Live.
