Luna Carmoon's spit-soaked, pungent debut loses the plot

, the “messy woman” is all a bit too familiar: no, she hasn’t showered in a week, fine, she keeps masturbating in the same pair of old jogging bottoms, OK, her idea of self-care is a bottle of Sauv Blanc. We get it., something deeper and stranger is at work within its young protagonist. Or at least, at first. Maria spends her girlhood with her troubled but loving mother Cynthia , a hoarder who tries to make life magical for her little girl in spite of their poverty.

We are reintroduced to Maria as an 18-year-old in her foster home: she is gawky, pubescent, and has inherited her mother’s disinterest in grooming or washing. She has a slightly feral energy, emphasised by the way the camera lingers on the greasy sheen of her teen forehead or a dirty sock tip. It’s surprising and pungent stuff – you can practically feel the miasma of sweat and ick coming off the screen.
