Those caught flouting the rules now facing fines ranging from £430 to £1,290
Holidaymakers could be slapped with hefty fines as Spanish islands Ibiza and Majorca clamp down on street drinking and party boats The Balearic Islands are ramping up enforcement of 2020 laws that already prohibit the sale of alcohol from 9:30pm to 8am, with those caught flouting the rules now facing fines ranging from £430 to £1,290.
Captains are also barred from picking up or dropping off passengers in these zones, as reported by the Majorca Daily Bulletin. This follows a previous ban on advertising for party boats in these localities.Spanish authorities have expressed that this initiative is part of a broader effort to "force a real change in the tourism model of those destinations."
Luis Pomar, a Balearic Islands tourism council press officer told the BBC the 2020 law had curbed rowdy behaviour. He said the law would not be needed "in three to four years, if we instil in people how to behave."
