A nationwide survey by Showcase Cinemas reveals Home Alone (1990) as the favourite Christmas film among Brits, beating classics like It's A Wonderful Life and Love Actually. The study also shows a shift towards cinema over pantomimes during the festive season.
Brits have been voting for their favourite Christmas film of all time and Home Alone (1990) has been crowned number one according to a nationwide survey. The study, conducted by Showcase Cinemas, revealed the iconic 90s film starring Macauley Culkin won 13 per cent of the vote, beating both It's A Wonderful Life (1946) at 9 per cent and Love Actually (2003) with 9 per cent to the top spot.
Securing fourth place was the hotly debated Die Hard (1988) despite director John McTiernan denying it’s a Christmas film. The other Christmas classics to make the top ten are Elf, A Christmas Carol, Miracle on 34th Street, The Muppets Christmas Carol, Home Alone 2: Lost In New York and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. UK’S TOP TEN CHRISTMAS FILMS OF ALL TIME: The study also found that despite being a long-time festive tradition to attend the pantomime at Christmas, more Brits are turning to the cinema over the theatre during the festive period. More than eight in ten respondents (82 per cent) stated that they'd rather watch a film on the big screen than go to a panto. More than six in ten also said that watching Christmas films with their family and friends is one of their favourite things to do over the festive period. Showcase Cinemas have been airing some of the nation's favourite Christmas films in the lead up to the big day. Jon Dixon, UK Marketing Director at Showcase Cinemas, said: 'We’re delighted to bring four festive favourites back to the big screen, including the UK’s favourite Christmas film of all time, Home Alone. 'Our survey found that a huge 67 per cent of Brits say Christmas films make them feel nostalgic, so this is a great opportunity to relive our favourite festive memories together at the cinema.
