A poll by the Cook Political Report put her ahead in five of the seven battlegrounds – North Carolina, Michigan, Arizona, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – while the former president led in Nevada. Ms Harris and Mr Trump were tried in Georgia. By contrast, Mr Trump, 78, led Mr Biden in six of those states in May.
Mr Trump has vowed to round up and deport thousands of undocumented migrants if he wins in November, and at last month’s Republican National Convention many of his supporters carried signs reading: “Mass Deportation Now!” Ms Harris is vulnerable to attacks on both the economy and record immigration as she was Mr Biden’s Vice-President and had been been given the thankless task of trying to address the major drivers for immigration from Central America.“Under border tsar Harris, illegal aliens are pouring in by the millions and millions and millions,” Mr Trump told a rally in North Carolina in July amid cheers from the border.
Nevertheless, this is an issue on which Ms Harris remains vulnerable and she has vowed to take a tougher approach.
