One of the main roads in Oldham remains closed tonight with police investigating the collision
Those living and working near the scene of a serious crash one of the main roads in Oldham have spoken of their horror after emergency services flooded the area. It happened on Park Road, close to the entrance to Alexandra Park Retail Park, at around shortly before 3:20pm this afternoon.
A large amount of emergency service vehicles began flooding the area in the minutes after the collision including police, paramedics and fire engines. The air ambulance also landed on the car park behind the building which houses the Matalan store and Pure Gym. Almost the entire section of Park Road from the Ashton Road roundabout to near Alexandra Park has been cordoned off and remains closed.READ MORE: John Belfield charged with murder after being deported from South America Three cars can be seen inside the cordon, one of which appears to have had its roof cut off. It is being investigated by Greater Manchester Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit with officers remaining at the scene carrying out enquiries tonight. The force are yet to issue an update on the incident. However, some of those who were in the area at the time have told the Manchester Evening News of their shock and upset as they saw the response to the incident unfold. A worker at one premises in the retail park, who didn't want to be identified, said she saw a police officer tending to a casualty in the immediate aftermath. "I heard the really loud sirens, so came out and there were police and ambulances everywhere. I walked over and saw the police officer . "So I stepped away then. I didn't want to get too close. It looked like they might be cutting someone out. I couldn't work out exactly what had happened but you could tell it was really serious. It was manic. It was really upsetting as well. They told it us it would be at least five hours before the road re-opens."A nearby shopkeeper said: "Some of my customers told me something had happened but I could already hear the sirens. I went out and there so many police and ambulances. They were cordoning off the whole area. I didn’t see what happened but you could tell it was serious because of how many of them there were and how big the cordon was. It’s really sad and worrying” While another local said: "I just heard the road go really quiet. So I came out then I saw the helicopter landing. I knew it must be quite bad at that point. The police were shutting it off. Everyone’s obviously really concerned as it doesn’t look good at all." The air ambulance took off and left the scene at around 4:30pm. Once the helicopter had left the scene an access gate at the rear of the retail park was opened to allow cars who had been stuck on the site out via Wellington Street which runs behind the site. A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said:"Just before 3.20pm today two fire engines from Oldham and Chadderton fire stations plus the technical response unit from Ashton fire station were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Park Road, Oldham. "Crews remain in attendance alongside colleagues from North West Ambulance Service and Greater Manchester Police." A GMP spokesperson said earlier on Saturday: "At around 3.15pm, officers responded to reports of an RTC in Park Road, Oldham. "Road closures are currently in place while police and other emergency services carry out their work."
