Not everyone's happy
A new development with more than 100 new homes east of Lancaster near the M6 have raised fears about the impact on the landmark Ashton Memorial and former Lancaster Moor Hospital, along with wider views seen from the Forest of Bowland area of outstanding natural beauty, which is similar to a national park.
However, Lancaster planning officers are advising councillors to approve the application with various conditions. These include building materials, providing 35 affordable homes, cash contributions from the developers for high school places and bus services, creating a management company and maintaining the site’s landscaping, drains and lighting.
Regarding landscape issues, it adds: “Whilst the development will result in the loss of open agricultural land, it is considered that it would not be overly prominent within the landscape and would relate well with the existing residential development [nearby]. The scheme also retains a separation between the M6 motorway and the built development. The amended layout and design now responds positively to the existing built environment.
“Standen Park House is grade II* listed and around 280 metres from the site. A conservation area has also been relatively recently designated, covering the former hospital building and a wider area, and extends up to part of the western boundary. Ashton Memorial Gardens and Williamson Park comprise a grade II registered park and garden and are approximately 450 metres from the site.
