The Albanese government has suffered its first major policy setback with the Senate set to reject its signature $10 billion affordable housing policy.

The Albanese government has suffered its first major policy setback, with the Senate set to reject its signature $10 billion affordable housing policy, pushing any possible resolution beyond the May budget.

A Labor source said the government gave some ground on eight areas of demand issued by the Greens, but the two sides remained poles apart. The Greens and Senator Pocock want to see a significant boost to housing and rental assistance in the May 9 budget but, as of Tuesday there was no indication the government would budge.

Labor aims to fund 30,000 social and affordable rental homes over five years, including 4000 properties for women and children facing family and domestic violence, as well as for older women at risk of homelessness. The Greens say the estimated $500 million annual return from the fund would not build enough houses, and they want the states and Commonwealth to contribute $5 billion each year to a trust that would build one million homes over 20 years.
