If he wins the presidential election, the unpredictable Republican has a potential ally in the form of the new Conservative leader
There are three elections in 2024 that determine the path of the next few years for Sir Keir Starmer. The first, of course, was the general election in which he emerged victorious back in July.: even with the Tories as a low ebb, she is now installed as the most likely person to take over from Starmer as the country’s next Prime Minister.
Labour’s preference is clearly for Harris, even if ministers will not say so publicly. If she emerges victorious from this ultra-close election, the Government will breathe a sigh of relief. If Trump returns to the White House, on the other hand, the Prime Minister and his allies will know they could be in for a bumpy time – and today’s Tory leadership announcement could make that worse.
The Prime Minister will do his best to get close to a second Trump administration, if it comes to pass, but occasional tensions are inevitable. He is so far in outlook and instincts from Mr Trump that the pair would surely clash over issues such as immigration, the war in Ukraine and even lower-priority policy areas such as transgender rights.
Things could be different this time around, in the event of a Trump comeback. Any public jabs at British policy might well pick up Badenoch’s backing, keeping the row going for longer and dragging Starmer into a transatlantic back-and-forth when he would rather float above it. Labour ministers are cautiously optimistic that they will be able to strike up a good relationship with Trump; his first meeting with the Prime Minister in late September is understood to have gone well, and his allies have signalled that they want to work together constructively. But when things start to go wrong – and they will, if the mercurial Republican wins – Starmer now faces a double assault thanks to the new Tory leadership.
