The Prime Minister has clashed with the former president after it emerged Labour staffers were being sent to campaign in America
when he was in the White House, warned that further such bust-ups were almost inevitable if the Republicans win the election on 5 November.Johnson had a close relationship with the then-president despite having previously mocked him.: “He and Boris got on really well which counted for a lot. The aide said: “We managed to avoid having public rows with him, without compromising our values. Ultimately you try and keep as many of the rows behind the scenes, and you manage the unpredictability of it. “If he wins, they have to shrug off this whole thing – as much as they want Trump to forget it, they are going to have to forget that they were in caught in this massive row.”
He suggested that the Prime Minister would benefit if Trump saw him as a strong leader, adding: “If you don’t have a personal relationship with the US president, there is always a chance to develop one. If Trump does win, Keir will by default be in a room with him several times a year.”Former Labour minister Ed Balls said that the decision to send party staff to campaign in the US was “naive and gauche”.
