Having your phone or bag snatched from you on the street is becoming an increasingly common experience for people in England and Wales.
Radio 5 Live has been speaking to Jake Moore, a global cybersecurity advisor at internet security company ESET, to find out.“Being vigilant is number one”, Jake says, “make your passcode completely unique and never type it in in public.” He explains how some two-factor authentication codes are sent via text messages, which are “not as safe as people think”.
“If a phone is five years old, they are out of security warranty anyway so you’ve not only got the theft problem but you’ve also got the security problem… unless of course you’re using a real old ‘brick’ phone but that just makes me shiver”, he joked.Jake says phones that are reported stolen are “blacklisted” by UK network operators.
“They might get into the email address and ask them for the passcode - maybe pretending to be Apple - if not, they can become quite threatening.
